The 2nd Atlanta
International Pop Festival was even bigger than the first.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported between 350,000
to 500,000 attendees at this festival. Perhaps closer to 200,000,
this so called "Woodstock of the South" made an
indelible impression on the South and helped propel The Allman
Brothers Band and Southern Rock into the National spotlight. It's
also the night Jimi Hendrix played his Star Spangled Banner-on
the Fourth of July!!
Officials and civil authorities in the county were admirably
hospitable to this cultural invasion - hosing down the crowd
when it got too hot, and tolerating the traffic. Until the
1996 Olympics this event is thought to be the largest gathering
in Georgia history.
